
South Korean soccer sensation Son Heung-min (Tottenham) exploded for multiple goals in a practice match with an English third division team, raising expectations for the upcoming 2024-2025 season.
Son’s English Premier League (EPL) side Tottenham Hotspur played League One (third tier) side Cambridge United in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Wednesday (local time), winning 7-2, Football England reported.
After leading 5-0 at halftime, Spurs scored two second-half goals and conceded two.
“Brennan Johnson scored a hat-trick in the first half, while Son Heung-min was also on fire with two goals,” according to the report, which cites no official match details such as scorers or times of goals.
Tottenham boss Anzhi Postecoglou rotated his squad, giving most of the players in the squad game time, the report added.
Son, who finished the 2023-2024 season with 17 goals and 10 assists, returned home on May 23 and spent about six weeks in Korea before leaving for England again on May 7.
Tottenham will play six official friendlies this summer.
Spurs will face Hearts (Scotland) on May 18 and Queens Park Rangers (QPR-England) on May 20 before shifting their focus to East Asia.
Son Heung-min will follow Tottenham back to South Korea after a friendly against last year’s J-League champions Bissell Kobe at Tokyo National Stadium on Sept. 27.

Son and Tottenham will play the first leg against Team K-League at Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. on July 31.
On Aug. 3 at 8 p.m., they’ll face Bayern Munich at the same stadium, where Korean defensive nucleus Kim Min-jae plays.
After the Asian tour, Tottenham will play a second friendly against Munich on August 11 in England.
This will wrap up their preseason friendly schedule, and Spurs will then begin preparations for the start of the 2024-2025 season.
The new season of the EPL opens on August 17 with a match between Manchester United and Fulham.
Tottenham’s first match will be against Leicester City on Aug. 20 at 4 a.m.
