Manchester City’s Rodri, 28, winner of the 2024 Ballon d’Or, edged out Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, 24, by just 41 points.
French soccer publication France Football released the detailed voting results for the 2024 Ballon d’Or on Monday (Sept. 9). Rodri was named the best player in the journalists’ poll with 1170 points. In second place was Vinicius with 1129 points. Only 41 points separated the two players.
The Ballon d’Or is voted on by 100 journalists from around the world. The rankings are based on a sliding scale of 15 points, 12 points, 10 points, 8 points, 7 points, 5 points, 4 points, 3 points, 2 points, and 1 point. The player with the highest total score is recognized as the best player. This year’s Ballon d’Or was voted on by 99 voters, excluding Syria.
The announced total was 6633 points. The difference between Rodríguez and Vinicius was a close one, less than 1% of the total.
Prior to the ceremony, the Real Madrid squad reacted to the news that Vinicius had not won the award. They decided to boycott the ceremony. It was a sign of the team’s high expectations for Vinicius.

Bellingham came in third, behind Rodriguez and Vinicius. Bellingham’s score was 917 points. In fourth place was Carvajal with 550 points. Holland and Mbappe were fifth and sixth with 432 and 420 points, respectively.
